What’s the difference between hybrid cloud computing and multi cloud computing? Are you stuck in this conundrum and unable to figure out which model works best for your business? If yes, keep on reading!

Cloud computing isn’t a new thing anymore but the field itself hasn’t matured to its full extent. One of the many confusions surrounding cloud computing or cloud deployment is what model of cloud computing is suitable for business organizations. There are different types of cloud computing models but our discussion today will be limited to hybrid cloud computing and multi cloud computing. The reason behind this limitation is that a lot of people do get confused among the two. In fact, a major portion of people with limited knowledge regarding cloud computing considers the two models as interchangeable.

The blog is dedicated to differentiate between hybrid cloud and multi cloud computing along with the advantages both the two models provide. One thing that’s to be noted is that there are similarities between hybrid cloud and multi cloud, but there are key differences as well:

Hybrid Cloud Computing – Orchestration of Public & Private Cloud:

Hybrid Cloud Computing can be defined as a system of cloud computing that relies on the orchestration of premises infrastructure with public clouds. Premises infrastructure simply implies private cloud networks. The public cloud is essentially considered as a third party in this arrangement and on-premises systems are interlinked so that the two platforms are orchestrated.

Hybrid cloud computing can be seen as an extension of your private cloud network. The difference is that it will be integrated with a third-party public cloud. This fact enables hybrid cloud to form a segmented layer of the cloud yet it remains a single overall network. Virtual Machines on such a computing network work in cohesion with the virtualization layer which also acts as a host for the VMs. The segmentation of Hybrid Cloud doesn’t mean that the computing network becomes decentralized, it still maintains its centralized identity structure throughout.

Some Benefits of Hybrid Cloud Computing:

  • A highly optimal cloud environment that offers secured high-speed connectivity.
  • Monitoring & resource management is unified across the network
  • Dedicated Cloud Services across all segments (Public & Private)
  • Hybrid Cloud networks are scalable as they can enhance operational management

Multi cloud Computing – Multiple Cloud Service Providers:

Multi cloud computing can be seen as a cloud deployment model that consists of multiple cloud services from multiple cloud vendors. This usually involves the public as well as private cloud vendors. This is where the confusion lies and people can sometimes relate it with hybrid cloud environments. Multi cloud computing however can be used in different public cloud vendors and hence can create different cloud environments.

The major difference and one of the main benefits of multi cloud deployment over a network are that it can avoid lock-ins with a single public cloud provider. With the options of different public cloud provider’s users don’t get stuck within a single cloud provider.

Some Benefits of multi cloud computing:

  • Multi cloud environment’s biggest advantage is that you can avoid vendor lock ins.
  • Risk management is important in cloud deployment. If a vendor somehow fails, you can quickly switch to another vendor.
  • Low cost of cloud integration while maintaining a high speed network.
  • A tightly secured network

Hybrid cloud computing vs Multi cloud computing is a debate that has long confused individuals looking into cloud networks. The bottom line is that both are different from each other yet there is a similarity as well. All hybrid clouds can be multi cloud but a multi cloud network can’t be a hybrid one because of the fact that it uses multiple vendors. Selecting a multi cloud model can certainly provide you flexibility and removes all sorts of barriers towards vendor lock-ins while maintaining its security protocols.
