Let’s talk about Ethics in AI.
‘WHO DECIDES SHOULD?’
Christine Fox started her dialogue about ‘the ethical dilemma we as a nation face on AI and autonomous tech’ in her TED talk back in the year 2017. The talk opened with a video showed on the big screen where 4 robots of different sizes were standing in a straight line. The very first robot started walking towards the main hall of the office. The incident recorded later was explained by Christine in such a way:
“I wanted to start today’s conversation with that video because I think it really captures the complexity surrounding technology today. I have looked at that video with a lot of colleagues and friends and I find that peoples’ reactions to that video follow along sort of three phases, so, let me describe them.
Phase 1: WOW, is that cool right. Those guys are amazing.
Phase 2: Then some start kicking it, that’s kind of mean right. I don’t know if they should be doing that. I don’t think they should be allowed to kick them like that.
Phase 3: They kind of walking up the hill, looking around, and that big guy starts going up the hill too. It’s kind of, they’re a little creepy. I don’t know if I’d feel happy running into them walking in the woods, you know what would they do. I am not sure we should be building those things, I don’t think they should be allowed to build them.”
WHAT IS Ethics in AI?
When people ask about what is Ethics in AI, the first thing they wonder, they think about ROBOTS. Let’s clear the dissimilarity. A robot itself is hardware, and AI is software. Then what is Artificial Intelligence? Please remove the confusion!
AI is a system that impersonates our ability to reason and to process information. The promises made by AI are inconceivable; it’s too fast. Just think how you will be left mind boggled with the great potential of AI in the forthcoming.
WE CREATE THESE TECHNOLOGIES AND WE NEED TO CHOOSE HOW WE WANT TO USE THEM OR OTHERWISE WE WILL BE USED BY THEM.
Ethics in AI: Solving Humanity’s Challenges
Whether or not you should be creating a code of Ethics in AI? You have witnessed the application of AI in real-time scenarios like self-driving cars, the world is also talking about self-driving planes and whatnot. Is it still not the right time to address the future of your children in AI and robotics science?
You will certainly observe in the future ‘software will be written by software.’ So let’s get a code of ethics that arranges ethical considerations at the start of the design. This concept of ethics in AI can be a glorious chance that you as a human have today but will not have tomorrow. You do not want to be blind and ignorant towards your creation, but to understand the negativities that can arise and confront upfront.
Make the world aware of them and do what has to be done. Why not align the systems with us? They would make the same choices that you might make. And, you have a long time to think about it if you start now.
Ethics in AI: Know the significance
AI is designed in a way that the system knows you better than you know yourself. Take it seriously, how will machines know what you value if you don’t know yourself? Machines with human-like thought processing and intelligence are just a few years away. The question is: How can you trust a machine to be fair-minded? There are included issues of privacy, manipulation, partiality, the future human-bot interaction.
You must have seen Ridley Scott’s Iconic Thriller Blade Runner (1982), even such movies have portrayed how the line between man & machine blurred away in truly haunting ways.
Ethics in AI: Roboethics
The most common concern is that Ethics in AI will outperform human workers. Well, AI will not replace humans but the work-category only. But how an AI-enabled economy should cater to this concern is another talk.
Roboethics is a concept of defined morals, ethics, and practices – accepted moral conduct of right and wrong. These ground rules are rules that should be applied in the development & deployment of AI. A way to cater to the future threat to humans, or using robots as killer robots in wars. In simple words, defining the behavior of bots and humans all along.
Conclusion
Joseph Weizenbaum in his article named “computer Power and Human Reason” talked about how AI should not be applied in positions that require respect and care, such as:
- AI as a CSR
- AI as a Therapist
- AI as a Nursemaid
- AI as a Soldier
- AI as a Judge
- AI as a Police Officer
In a nutshell, AI cannot be given human rights. A machine can never have a human-like conscience, also assigning them human rights would jeopardize the future of human civilization.
So, would you prefer to be judged by a robot? Would you reasonably reach out to a bot or a human therapist?
